I’m intrigued by the tranquillity of a room that lies like a veil over invisible things happening in the meantime. Everything can shift, while the room still looks the same. I want to bring that flow of events, driving forces, that lie beneath the surface of our reality and bring it into the light.
This room, the living room of my former home, exuded a self-evident sense that it was the place where I could live. But how this place fit into the timeline of my life and why it came to be there remained hidden, a mechanism I find puzzling. How do we end up somewhere, and what variables play a role in that? It’s similar to reflecting on why you were born; if you become even slightly aware of it, you’re overcome with a shocking humility. With this still life of threads, I wanted to create a marker of that realization in the place itself, something I could give back to this place.

The making of this painting was documented by filmmaker Lex Reitsma. The music composed especially for this short film by Rutger Zuydervelt and Anne Bakker enters into a dialogue with the film footage.
